Nextdoor VTO Day: Giving Back to the Communities That Matter Most

Written by Nicole Atkins

On Monday, November 8th, 2021, Nextdoor celebrated a huge milestone as we officially became a publicly listed company on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol KIND. Our team chose KIND as our ticker symbol because it is core to our purpose: to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighborhood they can rely on.

As a day of celebration and service, our teams across the globe celebrated the bell ringing together and then went out to volunteer in our neighborhoods. One of our core values is to Invest in Community and this year’s VTO Day was a great way to live out one of our values and serve our local communities.

Our employees shared some of the ways we volunteered and the impact of our day of service below.

San Francisco, CA, U.S.

“We partnered with Shine on SF, Together SF, Urban Alchemy, and the San Francisco Department of Public Works and Urban to do a community cleanup with over 90 employees in the Tenderloin District.” -Bobak Esfandiari

Our San Francisco Neighbors spent the day cleaning up around the Tenderloin District.

NYC, New York, U.S.

Our NYC Nextdoor team partnered with Little Essentials to sort, organize, and take inventory of children’s clothes.

The team spent the day packaging and delivering meals on foot around the Bronx in partnership with CityMeals on Wheels.

Amsterdam, NL & Sydney, AU & Toronto, CA

Our Neighbors in Amsterdam.

“We spent the day fishing for plastic in the Amsterdam canals to help keep water plastic-free.” -Michel Visser

“The Aussie team volunteered at OZHarvest in Sydney. OZHarvest does incredible work collecting all of the amazing produce restaurants and major grocery chains plan to throw out, and repackage this for the homeless and people in need. We handed out hampers that included fresh vegetables, eggs, milk, bread, and even frozen meals!” -David Eccleston

“The Toronto team had an amazing afternoon sorting food at the Daily Bread Food Bank. What made it even more special is that some of the food we sorted today was donated by neighbours on Nextdoor as part of the Thanksgiving food drive.” -Anne Morello

Virtual Opportunities

“Yesterday a number of us from across the U.S, spent our VTO day writing letters of love and support to be included in each and every bag of food that the New York City Food Bank gives out. It was such an amazing experience for us to give back to such a vital community organization. This is something that anyone can do at any time as they include these letters with all meals.” -Shane Kroll

“We had the chance to virtually mentor students through a partnership with Code Tenderloin. Employees got the chance to meet with students about their career goals and share advice. “It was great being able to help our Neighbors in the Tenderloin.  Hope we can continue to provide services since they are only a few blocks away from us.” -Robert Wong

“I supported a West Michigan food bank that provides lunches and dinners for kids at risk of food insecurity.” -Latte Zimmerman

“Today I’m spreading a little kindness and refilling all of the locations in our Seattle neighborhood with new kids’ books.” -Alicia Bathke

We are proud to be a part of a team that Invests in Community and partners with amazing nonprofit organizations who made this day possible. We look forward to spending more time in the upcoming year to give back to the communities we serve. Looking for a new role and excited to give back to your local community?
