Nextdoor Introduces New ERGs to Foster an Inclusive Community

Written by #TeamNextdoor

Recently, a group of employees led the initiative on creating two new Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) to continue to foster an inclusive environment for all Nextdoor employees. Check out the new ERGs below:

Mental Health in Nextdoor (MIND) is an intersectional ERG  focused on supporting employees to improve their mental health and well-being. Now more than ever it is important  to focus on mental health. Here are some statistics that drove the creation of this ERG.

  • 1 in 5 Americans have a mental health condition (SAMHSA)
  • “Nearly 7 in 10 employees indicated in a survey by mental health provider Ginger that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the most stressful time of their entire professional career, which has aligned with stark increases in new prescriptions of antidepressant, antianxiety, and anti-insomnia medications.” (How Has COVID-19 Affected Mental Health, Severity of Stress Among Employees?”)

The ERG hosts meditation sessions, yoga, journaling, and other practices that have positive mental health outcomes. As we now have an ERG focused on these efforts, the mental health and well-being of our employees will continue to be prioritized.

Neurodiversity @ Nextdoor (NDND) was created to provide a safe community for people who learn and think differently. Our goal is to remove roadblocks to Nextdoor employees doing their best work and to create a sense of belonging. Neurodiversity was a term coined in the late 90’s by sociologist Judy Singer and journalist Harvey Blume. 12%-20% of the population is neurodiverse, but it is often invisible, leading many neurodiverse folks to struggle silently as a result  (Read the full article here). We want to create a place for people who struggle silently with these issues to share their experiences, feel heard, and discover solutions together.
